looking for a creative enrichment activity outside of school hours?

Record a Song with Gemma is a relaxed, studio-style experience where children work individually or in pairs to create and record their own track in a friendly home studio in central Wymondham.

what happens in the sessions?

During this 2-hour session, children can:

  • Create music using GarageBand-style digital tools
  • Build beats, loops and simple backing tracks
  • Record vocals or instruments
  • Add ukulele, guitar and backing tracks if they’d like
  • Develop their own song ideas

They’ll learn how tracks are layered and mixed, and leave with a finished recording emailed to parents after the session.

And… there’s free hot chocolate!

why record a song with gemma?

Gemma Cullingford is an experienced musician, teacher and independent producer who has recorded and released several albums from her home studio. Her original music has received national radio play, including on the BBC.

Over the years she has also recorded her own songs for teaching featuring some of her students - giving them the opportunity to experience being part of a real recoding project in a supportive and encouraging environment.

Alongside her creative work, she has many years’ experience working with children and young people, creating supportive, confidence-building musical environments where creativity can flourish.

These studio sessions combine real-world recording experience with a calm, encouraging approach, helping children feel safe to explore their ideas and try something new.

example:

Esmae has recorded several tracks with me over the past couple of years. They have always loved singing, so they choose a song and I download a backing track, and spend time rehearsing it before recording. If we have time, we often add harmonies to build the arrangement and develop their musical ear.

When Esmae first started, they wouldn’t sing in front of anyone - not even their parents. Through regular sessions, patient encouragement, and the chance to hear their own progress in recordings, their confidence has grown enormously. They are now happy to perform at our open mic sessions in front of a live audience, and even in front of a large crowd at an open air event - something that once felt completely out of reach for them.

It’s been wonderful to see them develop not only as a singer, but as a confident young performer willing to step outside their comfort zone.
